So, as you all know, last week's meeting was a no-go. And this week's rescheduled meeting is as well, due to the newfangled Harry Potter club meeting that I'm sure alot of us are going to go to. We're not sure when the next meeting is going to be, but plan on it being post-Halloween.

Thanks!

-Caleigh, Sarah, Abi, and of course, Mrs. Nord

Just a question
by Rosencrantz Guildenstern (glass_radical)
at October 11th, 2007 (07:50 pm)

Does anyone here listen to music while penning their stuff? If so, what do you listen to? Do you listen to particular songs to set the mood?

While I was writing my last story I listened to the following:

"Avalanche" by Thea Gilmore
"Samson" by Regina Spektor
"The Hill" by Marketa Irglova
"I Found a Reason" by Cat Power (an ultimate download, and the song I used last year for "write a story based on a song"
"Wonderwall" by Oasis
and some things from the "Lost" soundtrack

The Mattress, a Short Story
by Rosencrantz Guildenstern (glass_radical)
at October 7th, 2007 (11:55 pm)

Two more flights. Out the door. Onto the sidewalk. The distance seemed short enough. To Benjamin Kozel, each step he took seemed to take hours. He held the old spring mattress firmly in his hands as he took careful backward steps down the stairs of the apartment building. There was a sudden lurch, causing him to teeter dangerously. He shot a look up to the blonde man on the other end. “Careful.” He said sharply. Nikolai Mikleshevski said nothing, looking embarrassed. Benny sighed and took another step. He felt strange doing this. There had been many things like this in the past few days, sorting things, putting them in boxes. Making phone calls. Writing checks. This, for some reason, felt the strangest.
The mattress was old, and worn. It’d seen its better days and didn’t look very comfortable. Still, the look of it was comforting. An old friend. They reached the landing of the second floor and stopped to readjust their grips. They set the mattress on the floor with a firm clunk, and shook out their arms, cracked their knuckles. Nik didn’t even seem to like looking at the mattress and he handled it as gingerly as possible. Looking at Nik, Benny tried to calculate how many words that they had spoken since Sunday. He doubted that the words could form more than three short sentences.
“Are we putting it in the trash or just leaving it?” Nik said, his heavily accented voice low. Benny shrugged. He was still in his suit and so was Nik. The mattress was one of the last loose ends. The details that used to never matter were now so important, but Benny was too tired to answer Nik’s simple question. “Ready?” He placed his hand atop the edge of the mattress. Nik nodded.

News from Czarina Carrie

Here's Carrie's latest email, in case you didn't get it or...yeah.

Hey Ink Slingers--

I wanted to let you all know about our next meeting, which will also be our end-of-year party! Mark your calendars for Wednesday May 30th. The party will be at 5 p.m. at Mrs. Nord's house in Poland.

She lives at 110 Riverside Dr., which is off of 224 and by the Poland Cemetery

We're asking everyone to bring some kind of snack with them. And once again, we will be having an exchange. This time we're exchanging Top 10 Lists. That list can be of books to read, movies to see, favorite quotes, things to do in the summer, etc. Go crazy with it. Make it unique. As for writing, if you want to read something then we would love for you to, but it's okay if you don't bring a piece to read with you. If you are going to read, Mrs. Nord needs a copy of your piece before Wednesday. Here are my latest prompts:

-Write about a favorite summer memory.
-Seniors-write some kind of farewell to BHS.
-Pretend you're looking out a window in your home. Write about what you hear, see, etc.
-Since it is your last chance this year to show off your stuff, write whatever your heart desires.

And as a last note, I have a personal request. I am in desperate need of poems, short stories, photos and artwork for the Watermarks page of the Bugle. The theme is nature. So if you have anything that could help me out, I would deeply appreciate it. Here's the catch, we're going to press on Thursday night. So I would need your stuff by Thursday. I know it's late notice, and I'm sorry about that. But if you do have something I could use, you can give it to me, drop it off in the envelope attached to the Bugle room door, or give it to Mrs. Nord. Thank you!

Have a great rest of the week! :)

The Prompts!
by Rosencrantz Guildenstern (glass_radical)
at April 18th, 2007 (03:28 pm)

In case any of our slingers was unaware, our next meeting is Friday, April 20th.

The prompts are:
-Create a story based on "hope vibrates."
-I deserve a _________.
-Begin with the line, "Behind her, the noise escalated..."
-In honor of spring, write a story set in the spring. (FYI: Don't forget that springtime is supposed to be warm and sunny.)

Also, I think it is in everyone's best interest if they come see Footloose on Thursday-Saturday (7:30), and Sunday (2:30). Thank you for allowing this shameless promotion. : )

heart,

Caleigh

at March 11th, 2007 (02:26 pm)

Hey Ink Slingers!

I just wanted to give you an update on the t-shirt situation, especially for those of you who couldn't make the last meeting. We are getting our t-shirts from Trolio's, and they are going to be $8. That money is due by this Friday March 16th. Please put your money in an envelope with your name and shirt size on it. Money can be dropped off to Mrs. Nord or if you see me in the hallway, feel free to give it to me.

Don't forget that Friday is the last day to turn in your money.

Thanks and have a great week!

REMEMBER: mrs. nord needs all stories ASAP tomorrow morning to be copied for critiquing. so get them to her early.

also, i have some news on the tshirt front.
shirt wizard would charge $12 per shirt.
trolio's would charge $8 per shirt because we are a BHS club. however, ive had some bad experiences with them. so i dont know if they are the safest option or not. let me know what you guys think. feel free to comment tonight if you see this. and then we can talk about it tomorrow during the meeting.

so this is the email i just sent everyone...

Hey Ink Slingers!

I just wanted to give you all a heads up about our next meeting which is this Thursday, February 1st. We have decided that this meeting is going to follow the workshop formula that Mrs. Nord told us about. That means that we are going to critique each other's work, and because of that each of you needs to bring a piece of writing. Before Thursday you will need to get your story to either me or Mrs. Nord so that copies can be made. Then at the meeting everyone will get a copy of each story, and we will read and write comments on each piece. When the meeting is over you will have several copies of your story to take home with suggestions on each one. Please plan on attending this meeting. I think it will do all of us a lot of good. It's important to get outside opinions on your work, even if that seems intimidating. Everyone at this meeting will be sharing their writing, so at least you won't be going it alone. :) As a reminder, here are the prompts from last time:

*Write a scene from your future (or your past).
*You're on the outside looking in. Describe what you see.
*One word: Passion. Write about it.

And as always, if you feel like writing anything else, that is more than welcome. I hope you have fun writing your stories. I'm really excited for this next meeting, and I hope you are as well. Have a great week! :)
